Salvatore Ferragamo was a Naples-trained shoe designer who initially worked for a boot company in Boston after his arrival in the United States in 1914. He was drawn to the idea of designing footwear for the stars of the budding film industry, and returned to Italy in 1927 to open a shop in Florence that catered to wealthy clients who worked both in film and government. While its creator passed away in 1960, his namesake company has grown to include perfumes as well as other fashion accessories, its first women’s fragrance debuting in 1998.
Born the 11th of 14th children in Bonito Italy in 1898, Salvatore Ferragamo, the “shoemaker to the stars”, found his calling at an early age and apprenticed to a shoemaker in Naples when he was only nine years old. He immigrated to Boston Massachusetts when he was 14 where he worked with one of his brothers in a cowboy boot factory.
