in 1983 Banana Republic’s image and product lines were made over to become the upscale store we see today. Old Navy was launched in 1994 to cover the lower priced end of the market while The Gap, the area in between. Piperlime was created in 2006 as a shoe retailer and athletic apparel was covered off by Athleta which Gap, Inc purchased in 2009.
With over 500 Banana Republic stores in the United States, 26 in Canada and with plans to expand internationally, the brand is posed to make an impact in the retail world. Gone are the days of themed store decorations including elements such as real Jeeps and foliage with atmospheric elements such as fog and steam as Banana Republic is now an upmarket brand which Gap, Inc. has gone to great lengths to promote. In collaboration with Inter Parfums, Inc, a manufacturer and distributor of prestige perfumes and cosmetics in the United States, Banana Republic produced their first fragrance, Classic a light and simple scent in both men’s cologne and women’s perfume format in 1995. The sheer and cool Banana Republic W for women was introduced the next year and the vibrant Jade in 2006 among other notables.
