Nicknamed “The Alligator” by a journalist who overheard a bet on an alligator suitcase, Rene Lacoste
founded his company with Andre Gillier in 1933, producing a line of sportswear with its signature green logo for tennis players. The company flourished, adding additional clothing, footwear, watches and perfume in the 1980s. Its first cologne, simply named Lacoste for Men, was launched in 1984, and from there it sparked a growth to the 43 different fragrance bases it boasts today. The red bottle features Lacoste Junior in a playful script and, of course, the crocodile logo.
The Lacoste brand was started somewhat unintentionally by French tennis star Jean René Lacoste in 1927 when a piece of luggage made from crocodile skin was promised to him upon his winning of a particular match.
