Estée Lauder Companies Inc. was founded by Joseph and Estée Lauder in 1946. Ms. Lauder gained experience in the cosmetics and skin care industry via her uncle, who was a skin care specialist and chemist. Originally the company offered products exclusively through door-to-door sales, but after only two years the brand had its down counter in Saks Fifth Avenue. The first fragrance, released in 1953, was named Youth Dew, and doubled at a perfume and bath oil.
