Josephine Esther Mentzer was born into a Hungarian-Czechoslovakian business family. Her nickname, “Esty” became “Estée” when she entered school, a name which she kept as she began learning about entrepreneurship at her father’s hardware store and her uncle’s chemist shop. In 1930, Estée married Joseph Lauder of New York, and in 1953, she launched the company’s first fragrance, Youth Dew. The perfume sold more than 50,000 bottles in its first year and 150 million by 1984. In 1998, Lauder was the only woman named to Time Magazine’s list of the 20 most influential business geniuses of the 20th century.
