Coty was founded in 1904 by Francois Coty. Born Joseph Marie Francois Spoturno in Corsica, he moved to Paris, France and adopted a new name to sound more French. He studied perfumery from a local pharmacist and
became a millionaire upon the release of his first fragrance. His perfumes were known for their beautiful flasks from Baccarat and Lalique. The company expanded its product to middle and working class women in plainer bottles to become hugely successful in the mass market. Currently owned by Joh. A. Benckiser GmbH, the company has many brands in its portfolio, including Calvin Klein, Chloe, Clairol, Covergirl, Marc Jacobs, Opi, Philosophy, Rimmel London, Sally Hansen, and Wella.
