Football in England is not just a sport. For many it is closer to a religion where supporters of their clubs are fanatically bonded to the players on the pitch. They follow the players every move, both on and off the field, and younger players will try to emulate their football idols, when they play. One of the greatest English born players was a man of exceptional skills who was one of the greatest free kick takers, who could make the ball bend around opposing players, past the goalkeeper, and end up in the back of the net for a goal. That player is David Beckham.
Born in London, England on May 2, 1975, David Beckham grew up like most youngsters in the country, a fan of football. At an early age his aspiration was to be a footballer. While other children said they wanted to be doctors or other professionals, Beckham wanted to play football. And, since the family were big fans of Manchester United, young David was also a fan who dreamed of playing for the club. That dream came true when she signed on as a youth player with United in 1991. From that point, the rest is history.
During his career with Manchester United, Beckham became one of the most famous and beloved players for the club and country. He played with United until 2007 where he scored 85 goals in 394 appearances in all competitions. But more importantly he became a leader of the club and helped distribute the ball to others that led to many more goals. In addition, he was one of the most important players on the England men's national team.
In 2003, Beckham signed with Real Madrid in Spain where he appeared in 155 more games, scoring 20 goals. After finishing his contract in Spain, Beckham moved to the United States to play with the Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer. There he helped grow the game in the United States, and his presence brought notoriety to the league and to soccer in the U.S.
After retiring from football, David Beckham has settled down with his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, and their children. Instead of playing, he has become a football club owner. He is a part owner of Salford City in England with several of his former Manchester United teammates and is President of Inter Miami CF in the United States which will be joining Major League Soccer in 2020. He also became a successful businessman with interests ranging from perfume to fashion.
