If the shoe fits… design it! Starting off as a law student at Emory University in Atlanta, Kenneth Cole quickly changed his step, jumping instead into the family shoe biz. His next big move: the launch of Kenneth Cole Incorporated in 1982. Unable to afford an official showroom during Market Week at the New Hork Hilton Hotel that year, Cole set his sights on getting a space in the nearby trailers, which he soon learned were reserved exclusively for production companies. Undaunted, Cole re-christened his brand Kenneth Cole Productions, and applied for a permit to film a feature film, "The Birth of a Shoe Company." The production-company-that-could sold 40,000 pairs of shoes in two and a half days! Kenneth Cole Productions lives on. Sheer grit and ingenuity prevails and the company has graced Forbes’ annual list of 200 Best Small Companies several times—now offering everything from shoes to clothing to innovative fragrances like Kenneth Cole, Reaction, Black, RSVP, and Signature.
