in the market and his popularity enabled him to found his fashion house in 1978—Perry Ellis International. The Perry Ellis Menswear Collection found an immediate following at launch which prompted Ellis to add more and more elements to his wares—shoes, accessories, furs and perfumes. The company continued to expand and by 1986, the year of his death, wholesale revenues were at about $250 million. The Perry Ellis Award (now known as the Swarovski Emerging Talent Award) was created the same year in his memory by the Council of Fashion Designers of America to honor emerging talents in the world of men’s and women’s fashion design.
