Perry Ellis created his fashion line, named after himself, in 1978. He was educated in retailing at New York University and worked his way up through jobs as a merchandiser and buyer until he was given the opportunity to design a women’s sportswear line. The success of his designs led him to starting his own brand. The brand expanded to fragrances in 1985.
Born in Portsmouth Virginia in 1940, retail buyer turned designer Perry Ellis started his career purchasing the works of which he would eventually become famous.
