Max Mara was founded in 1951 by Achille Maramotti, the great grandson of fashion designer Marina Rinaldi, who upon finishing law school decided to honor his family’s heritage and enter into haute couture
. Unlike other houses of his time, Maramotti was insistent that Max Mara utilize high quality manufacturing rather than hand tailoring to keep costs at a minimum and increase accessibility for the masses. Their very first collection, though limited—a camel coat and a geranium red suit, both had...
crisp, clean lines and was a success from the onset.
Continuing to develop production techniques while expanding their range of products, Max Mara choose to collaborate with various notable designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Dolce & Gabbana to help create a well rounded brand rather than a specific look. Coats remained a staple with Max Mara and in the 1980s they introduced their classic 101801 wool coat. This piece has become a symbol of the house and has appeared unchanged in every winter collection since.
Max Mara of today produces fashions under 35 different labels with retail locations worldwide and has expanded their goods to include accessories, bridal and perfume. In partnership with Selective Beauty in 2004 Max Mara introduced their first self titled perfume—a fresh floral yet musky scent suitable for anytime wear. Other perfumes followed including the fresh and crisp Gold Touch, the subtle yet sensuous Silk Touch and the warm and soft Kashmina Touch.
