“I start with a feeling, an emotion or a story.” Francis Kurkdjian

There are few perfumers that are as visionary and as extraordinarily talented as Francis Kurkdjian. He is honored for his astonishing career in fragrance in collaboration with designer houses before 2009 when he started his namesake house Maison Francis Kurkdjian, following the meeting with Marc Chaya, a former associate of Ernst & Young. Now, Maison Francis Kurkdijan is one of the most sought-after perfume brands in the world. Chances are you own and love many of the fragrances he created for some of the greatest contemporary designers and brands, such as Davidoff, Jean Paul Gaultier, Kenzo, Elizabeth Arden, Narciso Rodriguez and Dior. His accomplishments as a nose are prolific and many of the scents are considered masterpieces.

Who Is Francis Kurkdijan?

Francis Kurkdjian is a French perfumer of Armenian descent and was born in Grasse, France surrounded by fragrant fields of roses, jasmine, and lavender. He was raised in a little town called Gournay-sur-Marne in the East suburbs of Paris, which became his home ever since. At the age of 15, he knew he would become a perfumer and he created his very first fragrance Le Male for Gaultier in 1995 when he was only 25. It went on to become one of the most iconic masculine fragrances of the 1990s, and set a new standard for aromatic colognes with its flowery, powdery, spicy and sweet notes, expertly blended and is one of the bestselling designer colognes for men in 2023.

Four years later in 1999, Francis Kurkdjian created Elizabeth Arden Green Tea a fresh fragrance that opens with the calming and  scent of citruses and the note of  green tea, one of the first tea fragrances  on the market.

Narciso Rodriguez for Her was composed by Francis Kurkdjian in 2004. Musk is the star of this fragrance and intertwines with amber that gives it a golden warmth, and a petal-like tactile touch that is reminiscent of clean skin that bears faint traces of floral soap.

In 2008, he was named a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. He started his luxury brand Maison Francis Kurkdjian in 2009 and it became a worldwide success.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian L’Eau de Rose was made with the essence of 150 damask roses and is a fruity, dewy, feminine floral, sweet with honey and lychee. Oud is very common in fragrances, but Francis Kurkdjian’s Oud stands above them all. It is lighter and fresher than most oud perfumes with saffron and resins that from the start settles down into a lovely warm and soft fragrance. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Acqua Vitae  was inspired by life, that irresistible attraction shared by billions. Aqua Vitae is fresh and clean with Calabrese lemon and Sicilian mandarin shimmering like light on golden skin.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540, which was launched in  2014 as a commemorative fragrance to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Baccarat and only 250 bottles were made. The demand was so high that it became a permanent edition for the Maison Francis Kurkdjian collection, has achieved a cult status and is considered a modern classic. It is a bright perfume that has the same slightly mesmerizing effect on the skin that fine crystal has on the eyes. Rouge 540 opens with a quick shot of blood orange and there is a golden aura around the spices and ambery vanilla at the heart and base. It is very long lasting and you will be noticed wearing Rouge 540 Baccarat in the best possible way.

Francis Kurkdjian’s star keeps rising as in October of 2021, he was named the Creative Director and Perfumer for Dior Parfums but he will continue creating new fragrances for his own brand.
