Oscar de la Renta left his native Dominican Republic to study painting in Madrid. From there, he made sketches for fashion houses before getting a job as a couture assistant in Paris. He moved to America in 1963 to work under Elizabeth Arden. Two years later, he launched his own brand.
His strong attention to detail, couture experience and luxurious fabrics quickly made him a standout in the industry. He won his first Coty American Fashion Critics' Award in 1967 and was inducted into Coty's Hall of Fame just six years later. The company produced its first fragrance in 1977 and has since created perfumes for both men and women. He continues to be one of the biggest names in fashion, having dressed numerous celebrities and even former First Ladies.
