He expressed an early interest and talent for art, and he chose to study at Madrid’s Academy of San Fernando. He soon gained a job with one of Spain’s most notable design houses Cristobal Balenciaga.

He developed an eye for ready-to-wear fashion and took a position with the American fashion and cosmetics house Elizabeth Arden in 1963. Two years later, he launched his own fashion brand and line. In 1977, the first fragrance was released by this brand.
