Perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur thus used rum, or "pirates’ water," when creating this fragrance. The scent also features powerful coffee, vetiver essence, sandalwood, sugar cane and a hint of cyanide.

Many of his fragrances, including Black Phantom, pay tribute to this heritage by featuring cognac or other alcohols. Since Hennessy’s company believes that luxury should last forever, it sells this fragrance in a refillable bottle. The side of the bottle features a fresco design meant to look like the shield of Achilles. The bottle comes in a locked box adorned with a giant skull head.
