Vanilla Redux

Thanks to TikTok we are seeing a lot of Vanilla, but showcasing a more savory, less sugary side. Juliette Has A Gun Vanilla Vibes balances what could be cloying with sea salt. This is vanilla 2.0; you can imagine wearing Vanilla Vibes somewhere under desert skies at Coachella. Juliette Has A Gun Vanilla Vibes takes you on an olfactive (and visual- that multi-hued bottle!) trip. Not plain old vanilla here, there is a mineral quality that adds something distinctive and so 2023.

Tom Ford is one of the top designers in the world and he shows his strength with Tobacco Vanille, a cult favorite because it is uni-sexy. An unexpected twist of cigar tobacco and spices adds depth to a rich, but never overtly sweet vanilla with an amber dry down.

And you’re a cherry blossom
You’re about to bloom
You look so pretty, but you’re gone so soon– Fall Out Boy

Cherry Blossom

As winter sheds its gray colors and dresses up in beautiful hues of soft pink, it fills the air with an intoxicating scent of cherry blossom, known as Sakura in Japan is a symbol that spring has sprung. Cherry Blossom season is only a few weeks but a cherry blossom perfume is much less fleeting.

In Japan, the beginning of spring means hanami – hana 花, “flower”… cherry blossoms. Kenzo Amour created by perfumer Daphne Bugey Kenzo Amour evokes a trip to a Japanese garden, where cherry blossoms are blooming and the smell of powdery heliotrope is in the air. Exotic frangipani wafts sweetly as vanilla envelops you as the petals fall on soft woods.

Jo Malone Sakura Cherry Blossom captures the delicacy of the moment that the cherry trees are in full blossom. Bergamot and mandarin add the fresh spring breeze to the opening and rose and mimosa create some depth and are used to add the longevity to Sakura Cherry Blossom, Sakura Cherry Blossom ends with a sun warmed wood matched with a sheer musk extending the lightness.

Oud

Worn in Middle Eastern countries for thousands of years, oud is relatively new to the West. Today oud perfumes are trendy with most designer and niche companies who bring its exotic scent to beginners and to those who search out this rare ingredient. Rose, amber, honey, vanilla and softer florals brings out its beauty, balancing and softening its natural strength.

Yves St. Laurent’s M7 Absolu puts Oud front and center and is a newer version of M7, which is thought to be when the craze for oud perfumes began in 2002. With a balance of citruses, sweet and tart and grassy vetiver, M7 Oud Absolu finishes with ambrosial amber at the base.

Versace Oud Oriental: A thousand and one Arabian nights… with powdery blossoms of roses blowing across the desert under a gilded sky. Golden saffron adds spice and base notes of vanilla and creamy sandalwood lends a touch of luxurious sweetness.

Rose and oud is such a popular combination in perfumery and Mancera is known for their oud and for their rose perfumes. Mancera Aoud Exclusif adds patchouli for a perfect trifecta. There is an explosion of spices as well as leather and ambery touches. The twist is the fresh aromatic nuances, which takes away any heaviness.

Old Hollywood Glamour

After casual Fridays and wearing sweat pants over the past few years, women are dressing up again and gravitating to classic and chic styles. We saw it at the Oscars this year, Halle Berry who presented the Best Actress award stepped onto the red carper looking like a goddess in a dress reminiscent of a 1940s movie star, with her hair styled in waves, she Old Hollywood glamour for the big night.

Rochas Femme, composed in 1944, is a spectacular beauty created by Edmond Roudnitska one of the most talented perfumers of the 20th century. The name translated from French means Woman, and this perfume, loaded with plums and peaches is all out glamourous. Lush fruits, sparkling aldehydes, fruit, woods, and mossy notes, offset flowers and the plushness of sandalwood. The flacon is shaped to echo the curves of the fabulous old Hollywood movie star Mae West. You will feel red carpet ready as a memorable trail follows you.

Rive Gauche, created for designer Yves Saint Laurent in 1970, is an elegant Old Hollywood style perfume that seems cool rather than warm. Silver rather than gold, crisp and clean rather than gauzy and effervescent. At its heart it slowly reveals a plush rose, and a shower of white flowers … gardenia, magnolia and honeysuckle that exude breathtaking. We can imagine Kate Hudson in her silver mermaid gown wearing it at the 2023 Oscars.

Let’s Go Eco

Sustainable and eco-friendly fragrances are on trend for Spring 2023. Expect to see more upcycled ingredients sourced from leftover natural waste (think flower petals and fruits) in your perfume. Etat Libre D’Orange I am Trash showcases the bias of what’s considered “all used-up” and “unwanted” and celebrates a steadily growing attitude of responsible use of natural resources. Fear not, there’s nothing that smells rotting in this sunny and cheerful fruity-floral that uses upcycled apple, repurposed rose petals and cedar chips, along with ethically sourced sandalwood.
