Liz Claiborne Inc. was immediately successful with sales of $2 million the first year and $23 million by 1978. The company went public in 1981 and by 1986, had sales of approximately $1.2 billion—it made the Fortune 500 and became the first company founded by a woman to be listed.
When it came to selling her clothes, Claiborne insisted that her collection be showcased together rather than in separate clothing categories. In this way shoppers need not browse through various departments to coordinate one outfit but rather would be able to at one stop—hopefully within her section. Liz Claiborne changed the way consumers shopped and the way department stores merchandised their fashions.
