Diesel was founded in 1978 by Renzo Rosso as a label that would provide a more casual yet dynamic and modern couture look. His intention was to make Diesel a leader, a brand that would not be afraid to take chances in order to make a name for itself in the market. Instead of hiring “proven” individuals Rosso opted to hire people straight out of school whose sense of creativity had not yet become clouded or tainted by the trends and demands of the current market.
Rosso’s intention was to present to every corner of the world the same product in the same language thereby creating a brand that transcended all cultures and borders. The best that each country or culture had to offer was incorporated into one, making it distinctly Diesel—creativity came from the Italians, systems from the Germans while marketing was taken from the Americans. A large and encompassing production and distribution network was built that stretched around the world but is managed from its headquarters in Breganze, northern Italy. Diesel operates 18 subsidiaries across Europe, Asia as well as North and South America. The brand has a presence in over 80 countries with over 5,000 points of sales with more than 400 stores owned by the company.
