In 1834 missionaries from the faraway lands of Borneo brought to Europe what would become a prized addition to Europeans’ wardrobes and an influential scent trend which characterized an epoch: patchouli leaves! The camphoraceous, musty and rather sweet smell was found to repel moths off the most expensive cashmere shawls and silks during the long journey from East to West, thus safeguarding them. A mania for patchouli was soon afoot! Serge Lutens envisioned his exotic Borneo 1834 as the quintessential patchouli scent, revealing its natural cocoa, almost licorice-like facets, and boosting the non-gourmand darkest Valrhona chocolate with the addition of coffee notes. The bracing, bitter-green note of galbanum in the opening and the intense depths of French labdanum only conspire to make the fragrance challenging, like a film noir hero sipping single malt scotch who is bound to betray you in the end, but you simply cannot resist him.
