Review of Lui by A. Woolsey
Lui begins with a hit of bitter citrus and neroli, but there isn't much to Lui's top notes. Buffalo grass, one of the heart notes of Lui, seems to have an abrasive, green quality, and it sites squarely in the middle of the scent. It’s an arid sort of green - a wintry, cold, crackling green note. It's not unlike vetiver, to be honest, but not as rich and earthy. The wood notes are raw, faint, and fresh. How odd this scent is, when the grasses are dry and the wood is wet. The base is sweet, as sweet as the middle is bitter. In the transition between the two, which lasts several hours, Lui is a decidedly contradictory scent. Patchouli does not serve as much as a smell than as another texture, sustaining up the gritty, rough feel of the middle notes. The base has an earthiness, but patchouli as a distinct note does not really shine through. All told, Lui is a oriental that is bold, spare, angular, and sharp. It’s a manly scent that is rare in today’s market.
