Q: What scents do guys love?

A: Fondness for a perfume will, in large part, come from a memory context. If a lemony-jasmine blend sparks your man’s memories of a great trip you guys took together, he’ll probably love fruity-florals. And if musk reminds him of an ex he hates, avoid musks at all costs! Your best bet? Grab samples and ask him for feedback.

• Q: What’s the best way to test perfumes?

  A: Take home 3 or 4 of your favorite samples from a department store (any more and your sniffer will be too overwhelmed to decipher smells properly!) Apply samples to clean skin and give them a 12-hour window to fade from top to base notes, so you get a full feeling for their flavors.

• Q: Can you become immune to your perfume?

  A: After about 4-5 days of sporting the same scent you suffer “olfactory fatigue”, where your body can’t detect the scent as well anymore. Even on a daily basis, your scent will fade under your nose after about three or four minutes, while it will remain fresh and detectable for any new people you encounter during the day. • Q: Why does a perfume smell so different on my friends than me?

  A: Everything to your diet to your skin type can effect the way a fragrance smells on each individual. PH levels (amount of acidity in our skin) also vary slightly from person to person. Our individual levels of PH will determine how each ingredient in a fragrance will react with your skin. Although the overall scent remains the same, certain notes may be heightened or muted on different people. • Q: Do scents expire? How do I prolong their life?

  A: Approximately 3-6 months after opening, a perfume’s alcohol and aldehydes will evaporate and change its overall scent, making it smell more chemical-like.
