I bought John Varvatos because I smelled the bottle at a friends house and thought it smelled very nice, however when my bottle arrived and I tried it for the first time I was disappointed with the fragrance. It seemed to have more of a musk scent and less of a spicy scent than I had remebered. Let that be a lesson to me, I will have to actually test apply a fragrance before selecting it again. I did try it again to see if applying it to my clothing would be any different because I understand that some fragrances can have a significant reaction with your body chemistry, but still not a favorite for me and I won't be using it anymore.

This scent is masculine, powerful and sexy. It has a strong tobacco note, but not the resulting smoke, that is accentuated by woods and spices. Medjul date in the top notes and vanilla in the base notes provide a balance to the tobacco and entire structure. Clary Sage, Corriander and Tamarind Leaves add spice while Eaglewood and Amber round out the base. Whomever wears this will smell like they have been sitting in the club of a prestigious men's society next to a humidor as they drink martinis.

John Varvatos is a very sexy fragrance. However, it is a bit too subtle. The fruit, leather and amber scents do not carry well and soon disappear. Maybe it's my body chemistry, but I'm a little disappointed in this scent.

Very different and unique scent indeed. This scent lures me into a relaxed state of mind. Can't in no way be overpowering and really is a signature scent. I haven't smelled this on anyone yet, so in my area it is undiscovered territory. The bottle is a plus and is square shaped indeed but that's from the frontal position. The package was black with the the top portion of it being silver. I want to give this some time before i rate it high but from my first week of wearing it, nothing short of being good.

this is a quite delicious fragrance for men. however, i really see it mostly as a fall and winter fragrance as it's a bit too much for the warmer summer months. it's fresh and clean but still maintains an exotic woody feel. another fragrance that i find similar to varvatos is paul smith london which is a bit more of a sweeter/boozey version with a hint of mint. all in all though, i really think varvatos is a better choice- not as in-your-face as the paul smith but still packs a punch. the body products in the line are also very good in quality and i would recommend them to prolong the scent throughout the day.

This one smells kind of generic to me. But nonetheless, it is a sophisticated kind of scent for going out. I can not for the life of me smell that leather that is supposed to be in there somewhere. I think it would be good for bar hopping, but not for a more formal event. Because tastes seem to vary by age and local: San Francisco, age 24.

It has a distinct smell that I cannot describe. I do not think it is that sophisticated, and I don't think it's worth buying. It smells the same and it does not have a very pleasant smell. Some women go ga ga over this one, it is indeed 'romantic'-- not sticky sweet enough to pass for 'evening' or boring enough to pass for 'casual. ' Furthermore if the ladies in question have ever been clobbered by English Leather, Old Spice, or the rest of the redneck perversions one can still find at Sears, they'll dig it. The problem is the fruity flavor (somewhere between a prune a date and a fig ) that sticks to this one forever from top note to dry down. JV os very popular right now at Nordstrom's and other high end stores , so expect the hype to continue. Might want to give it a try if you sweat like a hog while tango dancing up close and your body chemistry somehow transforms it to the allegedly Russian Leather base; JV is unusual , tenacious and mercifully inoffensive but just not my cup of tea.

Rather masculine first attempt from the designer is very modern, unique, refined and up there with Chanel, Vera Wang, KC and Armani. Seems to bear a little similarity to Armani's Emporio Night. Very good first attempt from this designer is a bit unusual with its unique notes (the Russian leather in particular) but in general, a modern, refined and GQ sophisticated fragrance with a super attractive bottle design.

i give this 4 stars. i like the smell of it. i bought this for my daddy last christmas and he said he really like it. i think the smell is just right, not too strong and it stays long on your clothes or body. for me that's one of the important aspect i want in a perfume.

Fresh cool smell. Lasts for a few hours before I have to reapply the cologne. Not my favorite cologne of all time, but I received it as a gift, but I still like to use it once in a while. I usually use this cologne for evening events and use lighter scents for the morning and afternoon. Not a bad cologne.

The girls love it, I love it, and its long lasting. This scent is very distinctive and masculine. Its soft but strong, and it has a tint of leather that gives it a boost of maturity. I really go back and forth on this fragrance. I'm not terribly fond of it most times, but not offended by it either. Maybe that just makes it average smelling in my mind. The important notes that I think I am least fond of are basenotes and are Vanilla and Black Leather. It's a decent fragrance that does actually smell much better on many other people I've noticed, but there are still far better woody, oriental scents out there if you're willing to look for them.

Varvatos is a unique, masculine scent that is only hampered by average sillage and lasting power. It has a leathery vanilla fragrance that is great upon application - but you probably won't get a great many compliments on it as it sticks close to the collar. This is an average cologne...I don't particularly like it. I've tried it and smelled it a few times while at perfume stores and it smells ok at first. However, once i apply it to my skin it seems too romantic for a day out...I would suggest using this if youre going out to a romantic dinner date with your wife or with your girlfriend. Doesnt work well with sweat either, so i wouldnt suggest doing any physical activities with this cologne on.

When I first smelled it, I said “oh, this is something for a short bald fat greek guy!” Well, it’s actually much better than that, but you have to use it in moderation (otherwise – see above). It’s uniqueness is in the base note: leather. A faint whiff of it is fantastic, mature, responsible kind of smell (picture Pierce Brosnan). Now, why it’s marketed for the younger guys – that is totally beyond me. You’ve got to be at least 30 to channel Thomas Crown!

Yes, this will work just about anytime of day. The most noticeable scent in this is peppery leather. My girlfriend doesn't care for it too much, says it makes her sneeze/burns her nose, but I myself like it. It isn't for younger males. this one is most definitely made for the mature older man, with it's rich spice and coastal oceanic undertones. I do like the woodsy scents, but this one is perhaps a little stronger than I'd hoped for. My dad wore this one for a while and he really likes it. He runs a professional hair salon and his clientelle love it when he wears this one. I think it is in the median range of a good cologne.

Its refreshing and its not over powering. I love it.. I bought it for my friend for her birthday and we both usually wear gucci rush... but I wanted something different and this is perfect. Its light and it stays with you all day with just a spray or two.. and its enjoyable for those around you too.. After buying my friend a bottle I went and got myself one and have gotten nothing but compliments... This is a must have! I don't normally care for heavy scents, especially for day use. This one is light, crisp, and casual enough to wear without worrying someone might mistake you for a call girl. On the other hand, it doesn't smell like a cheap drug store perfume, either. (It does have a citrus-y smell to it, but isn't fruity, flowery, or powdery.) If you shop around, you can find some affordable options. I use the shower gel and the eau de toilette, in case you were wondering. If you're looking for a replacement for Escada Ibiza Hippie, you might like this one. However, this is a very popular scent, so if you're looking for something unique you might want to keep on looking. This is the first perfume I've ever used and have loved it since. It will always be my #1 perfume as my pick. It has the fresh fruity smell and a very clean and cool scent. I receive alot of compliments when I wear this perfume. Lovely and breathtaking.

Sweet-smelling, with a surprisingly strong rose scent. The rose scent might make this cologne too feminine for some, but it is still an appealing scent that is not as common as Polo Blue and Hugo. I've read that this is more suited for colder-weather wear, although I think it would also wear well in warm weather. A high-quality cologne with great staying power.

This is very good and nice smell. I had a layover in an airport that gave me time to stop by the duty free shop in the terminal and browse. I tried just a dab of Lovely and kept browsing. I went to my gate to wait as my departure time neared. The fragrance was amazing - not over powering at all. It reminded me of the perfect date - you know, when you look great and feel great.

Introduced in 2004, this is the first, and so far, only scent by John Varvatos. The opening is quite unique, with dates or figs or probably a bit of both in the mix. Later on there is a hint of smooth vanilla and leather. In fact, this fragrance can be summed up with the word "smooth." This is a very exotic-smalling fragrance, and it definitely stands out from the crowd. I'm looking forward to more from John Varvatos.

John Varvatos is a unique fragrance. Following the unusual but nonetheless intriguing opening caused by the Tamarind leaves and Medjool date, John Varvatos begins to settle down to become a subtle blend of vanilla and leather. The leather note in John Varvatos is not overpowering or harsh but is more of a supple leather that works alongside the vanilla to create a very impressive fragrance. The only problem one might have with John Varvatos is how long it lasts (or rather how long it does not). Within three hours after application, JV becomes a skin scent that can only be smelled by someone very close to you. However, once JV does settle down to this state, it can then easily be detected some four hours later. I personally believe JV should be tried by anyone who likes something a bit off the beaten path that is still wearable.
