Her parents named Preity appropriately because, well, she is pretty. Before her introduction to audiences overseas, the Bollywood actress played lead roles in two consecutive top-grossing films in India, where she's known for sparking controversy publicizing her shameless opinion; she won a national bravery award for not retracting comments about the Indian Mafia during a 2003 trial. I guess they didn't cook her curry over it, as Preity still writes edgy columns regularly for BBC News Online and broke out internationally in 2008 with Canadian flick Heaven on Earth.
