Greta Garbo was a popular actress during Hollywood's silent film period, as well as during the Golden Age that followed; she is one of few actors whose careers made the transition to "talkies". The Swedish actress was plagued by the deaths of close friends and family just after her move to Hollywood, which soured her on the place, but all of Hollywood loved her: Bette Davis was one of the many actors to comment on her skill, once saying "Her mastery over the machine was pure witchcraft. I [know] that no one else so effectively worked in front of a camera."
