This shy girl from a small farming community in North Carolina turned into one of Hollywood's most fiery femme fatales. The star of several popular 1950s films married both Mickey Rooney and Frank Sinatra, who left his wife Nancy for the "exotic vixen". Ava was said to be Sinatra's muse for many of his songs; the two had a tumultuous and passionate relationship, and her death in 1990 was said to devastate him profoundly. Ava was daring and intuitive, and her life mimicked how she described one of her love relationships: "It was a sort of madness, honey."
