Joan often starred in "rags to riches" film roles but her real life sort of worked in the opposite way: she went from being one of Hollywood's highest grossing and most popular starlets to being considered unhireable "box office poison" by the end of the 1930s. Marriages, child rearing and attempts to re-enter the acting world failed miserably too, and Joan became more and more reclusive until her death in 1977. Perhaps she wore Estee Lauder's Youth Dew fragrance to capture the spirit of her earlier, better days.
