The Scent Scoop: Wode by Boudicca

You’ve heard of disappearing ink? Well consider Wode by Boudicca the perfume version of that.

The London-based design house Boudicca launched it’s first fragrance this month. Sprtiz the graffiti-can-like bottle and a colbalt blue mist appears, then fades to transparency, leaving behind only the scent. The fragrance is warm and sensual, with herbal-spicy notes of juniper berry, cardamom, Nutmeg absolute, and clary sage, as well as black hemlock extract, the smell of raw opium, saffron, tuberose, tonka bean, and a heart of musky leather.

Mad Men Makeover: Betty Draper

Last week we focused on bombshell Joan, so continuing on our Mad Men Makeovers we bring you Betty Draper. She’s main character Don Draper’s beautiful young wife, living in the suburbs of New York City, raising two children (with the help of a nanny, natch,) and spending her spare time at the stables horseback riding. Reminiscent of Grace Kelly, she’s a natural blond beauty. To steal her look, try these tools. . .

1. Flawless Skin

The Scent Scoop: YSL + Vincent Cassel

HFA (Hot French Actor) Vincent Cassel will join the ranks of sexy celeb spokesmen, reports CosmeticNews.com. Yves Saint Laurent has signed Cassel — who has starred in such movies as Ocean’s Thirteen, Elizabeth, and Eastern Promises — to be the face of their new men’s fragrance, due out March 3, 2009. No word on what it smells like, stay tuned. . .

The Scent Scoop: Wanted by Jesse McCartney

21-year-old actor and pop singer Jesse McCartney has signed a deal to launch his first scent this spring, called Wanted. The fragrance for women — which McCartney had a hand in choosing — will feature notes of bergamot, apple, jasmine, rose, cedarwood, amber, and musk. WWD reports that “the bottle, which was designed in-house to resemble a drop of water — or the tear of a lovesick teen — is intended to have a sophisticated feel.”

The “tear of a lovesick teen” recalls our young NKOTB obsession, which would never have been confused with “sophisticated”, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed that Wanted is a huge hit for Jesse.

Dance, Dance Revolution

I recently read an article about a dance party in Finland, called SenCity, held especially for the deaf. The concept is amazing — employ dancers’ other senses (namely sight and smell) to allow them to enjoy the music.

Participants experience the music through “signdancers” who “use dance moves and sign language to communicate song lyrics” says the event’s organizer. Perhaps more importantly, and interestingly, scented oils that correlate to the mood of each song are released. So dancers may not be able to hear the music, but through sight and smell, they can feel it.

I would love to experience one of these events. I wonder which smells match which songs? Can you imagine which aroma would go with your favorite tune?

The Scent Scoop: Balenciaga + Coty

Today luxury designer brand Balenciaga and Coty Inc. announced a partnership to develop and distribute new Balenciaga fragrances. Considering the last great perfume the design house launched was Le Dix by Balenciaga in 1946, the partnership with Coty — who works with likes of Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, and Marc Jacobs — is about time.

Balenciaga is known for its minimalistic, innovative, and often sculptural designs for the modern, sophisticated, and confident wearer. We can’t wait to take a whiff of the new scents they have in store.

The Scent Scoop: Creed and Jackie “Eau”

Founded in 1760, The House of Creed is synonymous with luxury fragrances worn by Stars and Royalty alike. King George III commissioned Royal English Leather in the 1780s, Fleurs de Thé Rose Bulgare was commissioned for Ava Gardner, and Angelique Encens for Marlene Dietrich, just to name a few. And while Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis wore Fleurissimo by Creed — originally created for Grace Kelly to wear the day she wed Prince Rainier of Monaco — she’s never inspired a scent of her own. Until now.

The fragrance house recently released Love In Black, which is an homage to Jackie O created by sixth-generation master perfumer Olivier Creed. According to the company’s press release, the scent, “celebrates the mystery and style of this legendary woman.” Top notes are night-blooming wildflowers from the Greek Isles (which is where she married Aristotle Onassis) while other notes include Iris from Florence and Virginia cedar (both representative of places she loved.) The fragrance is utterly chic and classic — just like the woman by whom it was inspired.

The Scent Scoop: Avon’s Ironman and Other Sport-y Scents

Avon recently announced its partnership with the Ironman (Triathalon) brand to launch a signature men’s fragrance collection, due out in April 2009. Befitting a scent named after, arguably, the toughest race in the world, the tagline will be “Anything Is Possible” while the fragrance itself will feature notes of ginger, sparkling lime, violet, nutmeg, vetiver, patchouli, cedar wood, and tree moss. Characterized as an energizing citrus, mixed with exotic spices and rich woods, the cologne is inspired by “. . .the vigor every Ironman possesses,” says a representative of Avon.

Vigor indeed. It takes a special person to willingly participate in a race that involves miles (and miles and miles) of running, swimming, and biking. I wonder if the scent would inspire the couch potatoes among us to get moving?
